Abandoned

corners, growth

P1220193

The abandoned house

sits dark, empty and alone;

barred and bolted.

slowly disintegrating.

The owners left suddenly

in the middle of the night

many years ago.

They say the house holds spirits

from a violent past.

After many years of neglect

the house is exposed and vulnerable.

There are cracks and holes

and the paint is peeling.

It is marked and scarred

by age and the elements.

Yet, those cracks and holes

are openings;

light kisses the corners,

condensation dots the windows

and starburst moss and mould infiltrate.

Hope glimmers.

The foundation still stands,

sunken but strong.

The abandoned house has been seen.

The boards will soon come off

and the light will stream in once again.

It will be rebuilt and refurbished,

loved and cared for

the way it always should have been.

This house will become a home.

* Inspired by our visual journaling workshop, Once Upon a Time: Photographs have Stories to Tell and the work of Dr. Mario Martinez in The MindBody Code on the core wound of abandonment. This is also a true story of a house in my town.
