Imagine yourself here, June 9th-11th, 2017, in beautiful Niagara-on-the-Lake, Ontario, Canada for a photography weekend.
We all need to get away at times – to a new place, with like-minded people – to be inspired and rejuvenated. June is one of the best months to visit the Niagara region – the weather is close to perfect, the flowers are blooming, and the wine season is just beginning. Ten of us will gather for a weekend of photography, walks, and talks.
Niagara-on-the-Lake is located on Lake Ontario, near Niagara Falls – one hour from Buffalo, New York and an hour and a half from Toronto. This tiny tourist town draws thousands every year to its world-renowned Shaw Festival Theatre, as well as its quaint shopping area and historic homes. You can tour historic Fort George, a battleground for the War of 1812, or visit nearby Niagara Falls, one of the wonders of the world.
The town is small and walkable. We’ll photograph the historic neighbourhoods, vineyards, and the lakefront. And, we’ll share food, wine, and conversation. I’d love to meet you for this photography weekend.
A Friday evening gathering and talk on photography at my home, beginning at 7 p.m. (or whenever you get here). Wine and appetizers will be served. Weather permitting, we’ll walk to the lake for sunset.
Morning visit to the downtown shopping area on Queen Street and surrounding historic neighbourhoods.
An outdoor picnic lunch and photography in the vineyards.
A contemplative photo walk through the Commons park.
Dinner and conversation overlooking Lake Ontario. Note: This is optional. I will book a reservation at the Niagara-on-the-Lake Golf Club for those who wish to join us, but the cost is not included in the weekend price.
Saturday evening is on your own. I recommend going to a Shaw Festival play.
Morning photo walk followed by a gathering and sharing of photos at my home. We’ll finish by noon.
Photography and Food: $250 per person. This includes wine and appetizers on Friday evening and a picnic lunch (including wine or other beverages) on Saturday. Register and pay below.
The workshop fee does not include travel to Niagara-on-the-Lake or accommodations, breakfasts (included in most accommodations), or dinner on Saturday.
Location and Accommodations
Niagara-on-the-Lake is a 45 minute drive from Buffalo, New York and about an hour and a half drive from Toronto. Visit this page to learn more and to search for accommodations (being Wine Festival time, it’s best to book early).
You will have to book your own accommodations. As this is high season, it’s essential that you book early. While there are plenty of wonderful B&B’s and Inns in Niagara-on-the-Lake, they do fill up quickly.
DownHome Bed and Breakfast (on my street) – $200 – $220 CDN per night
Le Papillon Bed and Breakfast (two blocks from me) – $169 CDN per night
Or search through Niagara-on-the-Lake Bed and Breakfasts. It’s a small town so most everything is walkable. Let me know if you have any questions about a place.
If you’d like the full inn/spa experience, check out Vintage Inns. The Pillar & Post is the closest to me.
The Shaw Festival Theatre draws thousands to Niagara-on-the-Lake every year between April and November. See the schedule here.
Note: If you’re coming by yourself and are interested in attending a play, let me know and I will see if I can purchase tickets for a group.
Theatre tickets, Fort George admission, or any other excursions you do on your own.
You do not need a car for the workshop. Most places we’ll go are walkable if you’re staying in town. We will have transportation provided for the Saturday lunch.
