Last week was an interesting one, that’s for sure. Weather was crazy in many places and Indiana was no exception.

It started Monday night with a downpour of sleet. Yes, it looked like it was pouring rain but left a thick layer of ice. We got a short reprieve, then Tuesday night it started again, another downpour of sleet. Schools were out most of the week and even the art gallery where I show my work closed down for two days.

We were literally encased in ice.

By Friday, I was able to get out and it was like a Saturday during the Christmas season. Everyone was out – washing cars, stocking up on groceries, or just getting out because they could.

I was able to stay in most of the time, but others who ventured out were not so lucky. Hospital emergency rooms said that it was like flu season, except for broken bones.

However, what I kept hearing everywhere was how tired everyone was of winter.

“Enough with the snow.”

“I hate ice.”

“Isn’t this a crazy winter?”

I occasionally had those thoughts too. However, I think the people who really have an excuse to say these things are custodians and public works employees. They worked their tails off last week trying to blast through ice on sidewalks and parking lots so that people could get moving again.

I did hear some people say that they loved winter and how they noticed the beauty. I managed to get out and photograph some of it.

The thing is, there is a good side and bad side (or light and dark side) to just about everything. If you always see the bad side and not the good, you’re a cynic. If you always see the good and not the bad, you’re a Pollyanna. Both of these states are delusional.

Recognizing both sides makes life much more enjoyable.

How can you apply this idea of good and bad to a situation in your life?
