Rusted Curves

Last weekend was my first in-person photography workshop in my new town of Niagara-on-the-Lake. Seven beautiful women came and explored with me. I had a fabulous time and I think they did too.

Niagara-on-the-Lake is a destination. It’s a tourist town known for its history, wine, theatre, and shopping. It’s beautiful. We had a discussion about how to go about uncovering the essence or qualities of a place.

essence: the intrinsic nature or indispensable quality of something that determines its character. A property or group of properties of something without which it would not exist or be what it is.

We can learn to see essence whether we are travelling or in our own backyards. I wanted them to trust what they were drawn to and not necessarily shoot the typical tourist shots. That’s what makes our photography unique.

We each came from different backgrounds, places, thoughts and ideas. Our unique selves merged with our experience of Niagara-on-the-Lake to create something brand new. That is what creativity is all about. Some who had been here many times before said they saw a side of Niagara-on-the-Lake they had never before experienced. I was thrilled with their enthusiasm and willingness to open to new ways of seeing.

You can see a video of Niagara-on-the-Lake through their eyes at this link.
